Melody knew that it would make Ember feel better. Before Ember could protest again, Melody took the bracelet and clasped it around Ember’s wrist. “You can have it for an hour then!” She smiled and hopped into the water, waiting for Ember to get in and have her tail for a while.
Ember still shook her head in protest. She longed for her tail. But it wouldn’t feel right. It was Melody’s bracelet. And besides. Having her tail in a fake, artificial body of water would feel so foreign, only exaggerating the homesickness. “I can’t, Melody,” she sighed, unclasping the bracelet. “But I’ll tell you what. I’ll write to grandpa. Who knows, if I stain the paper with enough fake tears, he might feel bad and send me my own tail,” she smiled. It was a long shot, but it was worth a try.

“Grandfather sent it to me…because I am only half mermaid and need some way to have my tail without having to call him to the surface anytime I want to go visit…” Melody placed it in Ember’s hand, “Here, wear it for a little while and you will be less homesick!”
Ember shook her head. “No, Melody, it’s yours,” she forced out the words even though they weren’t what she really wanted to say. It took every ounce of strength to resist the selfish urge inside her to take the bracelet. “Besides,” Ember smirked. “If I take it now, you might not ever get it back,” she managed to laugh.

Melody took off her bracelet and held it out to Ember, “Put this on, you have the blood of Triton too so you can use it’s power. It will put your tail back when you are in the water!” Melody didn’t mind sharing with her cousin, especially when she seemed so sad.
Ember gasped at the bracelet Melody had. “Where did you get that?” she asked.
